Jeremiah Wright's Daughter Indicted: Daughter Of Former Obama Pastor Accused Of Converting Fake Paychecks, Hiding Money

Jeremiah Wright’s daughter, Jeri Wright, of Hazel Crest is being accused of helping former Country Club Hills Police Chief Regina Evans for converting fake paychecks from Evan’s nonprofit to Evan’s personal use, allegedly hiding money that was intended to be used to train minority and female workers in the building trades, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Jeri Wright is the daughter of the controversial former pastor to Barack Obama. She was indicted today.

The Federal prosecutors at Illinois central district said that Jeri Wright received about $28,000 in grant-tied paychecks in 2009, however, $20,000 of that was deposited back into allegedly personal accounts controlled by Evans. Prosecutors also say that Wright lied under oath to officers and a grand jury.

The charges emerge a year after Evans was charged with fraud in relation to a $1.25 million job training grant awarded to a nonprofit she established, We Are Our Brothers Keeper.

Evans and her husband are accused of funneling money from the grant to pay friends and relatives and finance the mortgage on their landmark New Regal Theatre on Chicago’s South Side. They said that they were trying to restore the venue to its former glory as the cultural hub for the struggling area.

A former Chicago police lieutenant, Evans resigned as County Club Hills police chief in 2011. She said through an attorney that she did not do anything wrong.

Jeri Wright, 47, is facing two counts of money laundering, two counts of making false statements to officers and seven counts of giving false grand jury testimony. The Tribune said that she could not be reached for comment.

Evan’s attorney has confirmed that Jeri Wright is the daughter of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the pastor emeritus of the south side Trinity United Church Of Christ, which Obama attended.

The pastor has been a controversial figure during then Sen. Obama’s run for the presidency in 2008 for his hate-filled comments on America.
