Samsung Galaxy Mega Officially Unveiled: Largest Smartphones Ever, Galaxy Mega 6.3 And 5.8, To Be Released In Europe, Russia In May

Samsung has revealed two new smartphones: the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8.

Samsung showed off its new devices today, pushing the envelope of screen size among smartphones. The new 'Mega' Galaxy models are so big that they've been dubbed 'Phablets,' in between phones and tablets.

Both Samsung Galaxy options come equipped with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and a dual-core processor. The 6.3-inch option comes with a 1.7 GHz processor, and the 5.8-inch version comes with a 1.4GHz chip. Both include 8-megapixel rear-facing cameras and 1.9-megapixel front cameras.

The Mega 6.3 will have two options for internal storage: 8GB or 16GB. It will also have up to 64GB capacity with the microSD slot. The Mega 5.8 will have 8GB of storage.

Rumors had suggested that Samsung was planning to release new smartphones that would have extra-large screens, but Samsung refused to comment on the rumors of such a device's launch.

Although the Samsung Galaxy Megas contain numerous advances, the most striking one is the screen size. In comparison to Apple's iPhone, the Galaxy stands out. The iPhone only has a 4-inch screen, and the latest Samsung galaxy S4 has a 5-inch display.

Despite its large size, the Galaxy Mega is still small and light enough to fit inside users' pockets and purses, Samsung claimed. The newest 'Phablet' fills a growing void, as analysts have noted that people want to carry a single device instead of both a smartphone and tablet.

JK Shin, the head of Samsung Mobile, said in a statement, "We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing and more. WE are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers' varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning Galaxy series."

However, people interested in getting their hands on Samsung's new 'Phablets' will have a while to wait; Samsung promised that the Megas would be available in Europe and Russia starting in May, and gave no hint as to when they would be released in the United States.

Samsung originally stated that they had "no plans" to bring the popular Galaxy Note to the U.S., but the Note II is available to all four U.S. mobile service carriers. Hopefully, Samsung won't wait too long to bring the Galaxy Mega stateside.
