Producer Simon Kinberg discusses the Channing Tatum-led "Gambit" movie's tone and feel.
Kinberg, producer of all 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" films, sat down with Collider to talk about the upcoming solo character film and how its different from previous mutant-related installments.
"I mean 'Deadpool' obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline 'X-Men movies,'" Kinberg explained. "The 'X-Men' movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas 'Deadpool' is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways.
"And 'Gambit' will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way."
Kinberg also mentioned his ideal timeline for the film to start shooting.
"We've been spending a lot of time together-Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum's producing partner], [screenwriter Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself-just working on the script, and we hope to start shooting next spring," he said.
The article also states that the fall start date is no longer happening, which means the movie's previously announced Oct. 7, 2016 release date will likely be pushed to some time in 2017.
Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was previously attached to helm the "Gambit" movie. The Hollywood Reporter now confirms that Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) has replaced Wyatt as the movie's director.
Channing Tatum will play the titular character starring opposite Lea Seydoux (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, Spectre) whose role has yet to be revealed.
Gambit was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Leen in 1990. The character's powers include the ability to mentally create, control and manipulate kinetic energy. He also skilled in hand-to-hand combat and uses a staff.
The film was set to follow both the "X-Men" spinoff Deadpool on Feb. 15, 2016 and "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 27, 2016.
Producers have yet to announce a new release date for the "Gambit" movie.
