Han Solo 'Star Wars Anthology' Movie Set For 2018; 'Fault In Our Stars' Actor Ansel Elgort To Play Lead

Walt Disney has annonunced a "Star Wars Anthology" movie based on Han Solo for 2018.

"The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley," reads Disney's official press release.

"The LEGO Movie" helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been tasked to direct the upcoming "Star Wars" spin off.

"We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," Lord and Miller said in a statement.

Both will be teaming up with veteran writer Lawrence Kasdan, whose resume includes the screenplays for "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Also on board the project is Lawrence's son, Jon, who will co-script the film.

"It's not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I'm excited to say we've found the perfect team to handle the task," producer Katheleen Kennedy said. "Larry [Lawrence] and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story."

A shortlist of actors rumored to play young Solo has emerged; it includes Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead), Logan Lerman (Fury) and Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars).

2018's Han Solo movie marks the third "Star Wars" movie to be released under the Walt Disney Company after they purchased the rights to the franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012.

"Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," the latest installment to the long-running saga is directed by J.J. Abrams and and will release this year on Dec. 18.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the franchise's first spin-off film will is scheduled for a Dec. 16, 2016 release. It is helmed by "Looper" director Rian Johnson.

The "Star Wars" Han Solo movie is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.
