"X-Men" property producer Simon Kinberg reveals Channing Tatum's "Gambit" will be a heist movie.
Kinberg, producer of all 20th Century Fox's mutant films sat down with Collider and discussed the upcoming solo character films "Deadpool" and "Gambit," and how it differs from previous "X-Men" installments.
"I mean 'Deadpool' obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline 'X-Men movies,'" Kinberg explained. "The 'X-Men' movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas 'Deadpool' is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways."
"And 'Gambit' will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way."
He also touched on "Gambit's" production timeline.
"We've been spending a lot of time together-Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum's producing partner], [screenwriter Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself-just working on the script, and we hope to start shooting next spring," he shared.
Collider's report also states that the fall start date is no longer happening, which means the movie's previously announced Oct. 7, 2016 release date will likely be pushed to sometime in 2017.
Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was previously attached to helm the "Gambit" movie. The Hollywood Reporter now confirms that Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) has replaced Wyatt as the project's director.
Channing Tatum will play the titular hero starring opposite Lea Seydoux (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, Spectre) whose role has yet to be revealed.
The character was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Leen in 1990. The character's powers include the ability to mentally create, control and manipulate kinetic energy. He also skilled in hand-to-hand combat and uses a staff.
The film was set to follow both the "X-Men" spinoff Deadpool on Feb. 15, 2016 and "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 27, 2016.
Producers have yet to announce a new official release date for Channing Tatum's "Gambit" movie.
