It looks like boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez had a sudden change of heart as he wants the world to know that he is not backing down from anyone and only wants to fight the best.
After winning against Miguel Cotto last month, the Mexican boxer made it clear that he is not competing in another catch-weight match and would only like to remain at 155 lbs. According to the Mexican boxer, he learned his lesson in the Mayweather fight.
Upon saying that, he drew the ire of Gennady Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez of being a diva.
"I think it's an insult to all the great warriors that fought at 160 pounds; all the Mexican fighters that fought at 154, fought in a division where they sacrificed their body. Canelo and Cotto have become somewhat of divas," Sanchez said via Opening Round.
The trainer added that Canelo should not think that he is boxing's biggest star by changing traditional mechanics established ever since the history of the sport.
"They're not bigger than the sport. The sport deserves that respect. Like I've said in the past, there are catchweight fights if you're not going to fight for a belt; you can fight at any weight you want. But when you're going to fight for a belt, there is weight that is stipulated by not only history, but by some of the old warriors that have fought for those belts that fought at that particular weight. So, yeah, I think it's kind of disrespectful for him [Canelo] to do that," he added.
Now, Golden Boy Promotions executive Eric Gomez said via The Sweet Science that Canelo is now dropping the 155 catch-weight demand and is now willing to fight Golovkin. Stay tuned!
