Dr. Who Season 10: Peter Capaldi Will Be Filming After Steven Moffat’s ‘Long Swansong’; Chris Chibnall Will Take Over Doctor Who Season 11

Dr. Who Season 10: Mark Gatiss said the next series of Doctor Who will be Steven Moffat's "long swansong." Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will take over as lead writer and executive producer for series 11 in 2018.

"'Doctor Who' is the ultimate BBC program: bold, unique, vastly entertaining, and adored all around the world. So it's a privilege and a joy to be the next curator of this funny, scary, and emotional family drama," Chibnall said in a statement.

"I've loved 'Doctor Who' since I was 4 years old, and I'm relishing the thought of working with the exceptional team at BBC Wales to create new characters, creatures and worlds for the Doctor to explore. Steven's achieved the impossible by continually expanding 'Doctor Who's' creative ambition, while growing its global popularity. He's been a dazzling and daring showrunner, and hearing his plans and stories for 2017, it's clear he'll be going out with a bang. Just to make my life difficult."

Steven Moffat will step down as head writer and executive producer of British sci-fi series "Doctor Who" after the tenth season. After six seasons, Steven Moffat decided to step down as the lead writer and executive producer of "Doctor Who" after its next season airs, in 2017.

"Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I'm just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out," Moffat said in a statement.

Moffat will still come up with a Christmas special as well as the 12-episode season 10 that is slated to air in 2017.

Doctor Who will be on hiatus until spring 2017. Peter Capaldi will be filming Doctor Who series 10.

"You have to be fit to do Doctor Who and so I've just been getting myself ready and I'll be getting into training to start the show," Capaldi told RadioTimes.com.

"When we start, it'll run for nine months and the most important thing is to be there and to be fit and be on top of everything. I'm looking forward to starting."
