Channing Tatum has been confirmed to be the new card throwing mutant Gambit and a standalone movie is expected soon. Initially, the film "Gambit" is already set for October 2016 release.
However, it somehow got into production hell phase due to trouble in the director's chair even production has begun. Rupert Wyatt ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes") was set to direct the movie but dropped out, "a changing script caused the film's budget to balloon, extending the shoot. Production was set to start in November, but has now been delayed to early 2016, prompting Wyatt's departure," according to Variety.
Wyatt was replaced by Doug Liman ("Bourne Identity") and because of the delay in production, the target October 2016 is a big stretch now only for the director and actors. Marketing alone could push back the film for about a year.
The delay has not surprised anyone familiar with the movie industry. But what surprised many movie fans especially for the card throwing super hero is the fact that it has been pulled from 2016 without any announcement of a new release date.
According to The Wrap, "'Gambit,' the Marvel Comics-based movie starring Channing Tatum and directed by Doug Liman, has been pushed from its Oct. 6 release date. " Instead of "Gambit" 20th Century Fox announced two more upcoming films without any titles but expected to be released on the following dates: October 6, 2017 and January 12, 2018.
Another factor that may have contributed to the changes on the release date is Tatum himself and "Deadpool 2." According to Collider, "Tatum recently signed on for an R-rated musical comedy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and is also set to reprise his role as Jenko in 23 Jump Street, though neither film currently has a release date. It's also likely that the success of Deadpool has taken some of the weight of urgency off the film's shoulders..."
Even with no release date set, "Gambit" could still make its standalone debut on the big screen. But fans would have to wait for Tatum and the production studio to get this film released the soonest time possible.
