PSY is the stage name of Park Jae-Sang, whose career skyrocketed in 2012 with hits single “Gangnam Style.” The popularity of “Gangnam Style” and its catchphrase “Oppa Gangnam Style” (오빠 강남스타일) has made the 38-year old singer became world famous. However, not many people know the song was a social criticism of over-consumerism in Korea, particularly in Gangnam area.
Born in a wealthy family in the Gangnam district, his father sent PSY to America in 1996 to study business in Boston University. His family expected him to continue his father’s business in semiconductor. But he began to develop interest in music and dropped out after first semester to enroll in Berklee College of Music.
He returned to Korea in 2000 and began his music career. PSY is known to be a controversial rapper and musician with his blunt and straightforward lyrics. The Korean authority strictly labeled his music not suitable for kids and teenagers due to his lyrics.
PSY joined YG Entertainment in 2010 and under the good management of YG, he finally made an international success in 2012 with “Gangnam Style.” Last year, he released his seventh album with two singles “Daddy” and “Napal Baji.”
