Veteran and acclaimed actor Song Kang-Ho is cast to play the leading role in the movie “Drug King.” The movie will take place in 1970’s Korea, when drug lords rule the crime world.
“Drug King” will be directed by Woo Min-Ho as reported by Segye News. Woo is the director of the successful political gangster movie “Inside Man” in 2015, starring Lee Byung-Hyun. The movie made USD 62.95 million in the box office, with a total of 9.1 million admissions and recorded as the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time.
This time, Woo takes on the new project “Drug King,” which focuses on the crime world in Busan, Korea during the 1970s. Woo cast Song to play the titular role as the drug king in the movie.
Woo has scheduled to start filming the movie in the first half of next year, according to KPop Herald. A smooth collaboration between the meticulous director and seasoned actor is expected to produce a highly-successful movie.
Lee, who had worked together with director Woo, was offered to play the drug king. But conflicts in schedule made Lee unable to join the cast. Therefore Woo selected the more senior actor Song to play the drug king.
The 49-year old actor is known to play difficult characters in his movies. He played an attorney in “The Attorney,” which was inspired by the story of the late president of Korea Roh Moo-Hyun. Song also played in the collaboration in the Korean movie “Snowpiercer, which was produced by Opus picture and distributed by CJ Entertainment.
His latest movie is the historical drama “The Age of Shadow,” which took place during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1920s. Song has won many Best Actor awards, including the 2013 Chunsa Film Art Awards and the 35th Blue Dragon Film Awards for his role in the movie “Snowpiercer.”
