The new drama of acclaimed actor Ji Sung will have big shoes to fill as it is set to replace "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim", which was a big hit both in ratings and with critics. The crime thriller "Defendant", will take on the Monday-Tuesday timeslot of SBS starting January 23.
Ji Sung will play the role of Park Jung-woo, who is a prosecutor at Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office. The mystery is that one day he will wake up without his memories, and finds out he is sitting on death row without any idea on how he ended up there.
He will have to retrace his steps and figure out how he became a prosecutor who never loses in court, to someone who is accused of murdering his family. Joining Ji Sung in "Defendant" is Kwon Yuri, who plays a passionate defender, but who still loses all her cases. She will serve as the lawyer who will help Park Jung-woo defend his innocence.
Yuri has shared how Lee Bo Young, wife of Ji Sung was very supportive of her role, and even invited her to Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young's home for script reading. It would be remembered that Bo Young played a public defender in one of her roles, so she really served as a good mentor for Yuri.
Soompi reports that Ji Sung has confessed to enduring nightmares as he prepared to take on the role. He has shared that sometimes he dreamed of dying or being a savior to a distressed family. Whether it's through rigorous exercise or immersing himself in the script, he reveals that he has pushed himself to his limits several times.
"Defendant" is penned by writers Choi Soo-jin and Choi Chang-hwan, and though Ji Sung says that it might be considered a dark drama, "Defendant," which Tripped Media has dubbed one of the dramas to look forward to in 2017, may also prove as an inspiration for hope.
