Some people might have noticed that there are a growing number of western celebrities who are name dropping several K-pop stars. Some of the people who are doing these are Kehlani, Wale, Kylie Rogers and many more. And because of this, it is very evident that the K-pop phenomena is still pretty much alive.
On the other side of the story, BTS, Exo, Big Bang and Girls' Generation are just some of the most name-dropped K-pop icons by western celebrities. And because of this, one can think that there might be some other hidden agenda as to why these name drops are becoming more often these days.
According to All K-pop, it is a strategic thing to do when lesser known celebrities name drop on another specific celebrity in social media. It perfectly makes sense for these not so popular celebs to mention popular idols as this usually helps their exposure and promotes them to a bigger market pool.
It really just functions just like the hashtag system of Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites. One example of this is Tinashe who publicly said that she is hoping to do a collaboration with BTS. Because of it, her Twitter followers skyrocketed to 644,000.
Then there's Kehlani who mentioned to her 360,000 followers to ask the K-pop boy group, BTS, to say hello to her. Wale who recently collaborated with Rap Monster might also be a part of this strategic scheme as his recent duo music recording with the K-pop icon is also her most note worthy feature ever since his "Slight Work" was released in 2011.
With all of these being said, one can clearly see that it makes perfect sense for these western celebrities who are yet to debut in the world stage, to tap onto popular and established K-pop icons. And fortunately, most of the time it works. Hopefully, they think of other legit ways to rise to popularity.
