An insider from the show's production team then clarified that the show's aim was to change the social media culture in South Korea. The source added that they highlighted the malicious comments as a warning to eradicate these hateful comments against celebrities and fundamentally whoever.
"Reply Night" officially declared their discontinuation following the tragic passing of one of their hosts, Sulli. The show tackled celebrities who appear on the program to clear issues regarding the malicious comments against them. Moreover, the show also became the center of controversy after it was revealed that the late actress and f(x) alumna died from taking her own life due to depression fueled by the incessant online bullying she received.
Moreover, the source explained that there were actually many celebrities who wanted to make an appearance in the show to confront the deplorable comments targeted at them.
"In reality, many celebrities are still suffering from malicious comments and it was considered taboo for celebrities to express their opinions about them. Various agencies will continue on the mission to change the culture of online comments, but Reply Night wanted to give the celebrities a chance to personally talk about the malicious comments through a variety show programming," the production staff said.
"We thank the viewers who cherished our show as a sounding alarm to fight against malicious comments," the insider added.
"Reply Night" also released a statement recently regarding this. The full statement reads:
"After hearing the unfortunate news of one of our main MCs, Reply Night debated for a long time about the production angle. We decided that it was no longer able to continue and will be canceling the show.
It was an honor to work with the confident and beautiful Sulli, and we pray she rests in peace.
We thank all of our viewers who treasured Reply Night as an alarm against malicious comments."
Sulli was one of the main hosts of the program, and through her stint here, she has expressed many times what she feels about the hateful comments addressed to her. As a matter of fact, she was scheduled to film for another episode on the day of her demise.
An insider said, "The reaction Sulli had after facing her malicious comments was refreshing and shocking. With the addition of Sulli and Shin Dong Yup's unfiltered talks, the show will bring you laughter and catharsis. Please look forward to it."
The show's staff reportedly began filming without the late star as she could not be reached. Then, they learned about Sulli's passing in the middle of filming.
