It has been a month since the singer/actress has passed but fans and fellow K-pop stars are still mourning her loss. Sulli is one of the most outspoken Korean female stars. She wasn't afraid to voice out her opinions and she wasn't scared to show her unique self. This was one of her attributes that people, especially her fans, loved. In an industry that tries to fake everything, Sulli was real.
Unfortunately, the beloved singer/actress was found dead exactly a month ago at her Seoul residence. Her death shocked not only friends and families but people all over the world.
Sulli's first TV performance was in 2005 as a supporting child actress in the drama "Ballad of Seodong." After four years, in 2009, she debuted as a part of SM Entertainment's Korean girl idol group f(x).
The cyberbullying, however, started in 2013 when rumors about her and Choiza dating surfaced. Choiza is a member of the hip-hop band "Dynamic Duo." A year later, in 2014, the couple officially announced their relationship has ended. In that same year, Sulli decided to take a break, she was already suffering from mental distress due to cyberbullying.
In 2015, she left f(x) and chose to pursue acting. A year after, Sulli and Choiza broke up. Hate comments resurfaced. Each time Sulli does something, people attack her. Then there were photos taken of her not wearing a bra that was posted in various SNS. The photos went viral and again cyberbullies attacked her. Sulli, however, showed a brave face. She handled the issue well, even saying that the bra is only an accessory and it is up to women if they want to wear it or not.
Sulli looked strong and acted bravely even up to the time of her demise. She was even co-hosting the show "The Night of hate Comments" which interviews celebrities about the rumors and nasty comments about them in the interweb.
No one was expecting Sulli's death, and that made it more painful. How can a young 25-year old who has her whole life ahead of her die because of anxiety and depression caused by cyberbullying?
As netizens, we seldom forget that celebrities are people too. Fans can get overwhelmed that they forget each comment they make could mentally affect idols. These idols are not God. They can smile and act like nasty comments don't bother them, but what do we know? Some comments and remarks may stick to them even after they go home.
Sulli's death has opened the public's eyes that celebrities and even people are greatly affected by internet bullying.
Sulli died on October 14, 2019. Today marks the first month of the singer/actress' death. May you rest in peace Sulli. You'll always be in our hearts.
