Celebrities joined the nation in commemorating the 6th anniversary of the tragic Sewol Ferry that claimed over 300 lives, most of who were students on a school trip.
On April 16, 2014, South Korean citizens mourned after hearing the news of the sinking of MV Sewol Ferry that was traveling from Incheon to Jeju Island. It resulted in 304 deaths, wherein 250 are students of Danwon High School in Ansan City.
The "Mister Trot" singer Kim Ho-Joong joined the memorial service, along with families who lost their loved ones on the tragedy. Kim Ho-Joong released a photo of himself on his SNS on the 16th, with the message:
"Hello, I'm Kim Ho-Joong.
"Today is the sixth anniversary of the Ferry Sewol victims. Please pay tribute together. I won't forget. #Remember0416."
MONSTA X, Lee Sang-min, and Shin Sung-woo also remember the Sewol Ferry tragedy by sharing the "yellow ribbon" on their SNS with the hashtag #Remember0416.
The country grieved over this tragic incident and continues to do so every year. The captain and the crew were also accused of irresponsibility, while the Coast Guard of neglect of duty. Then-president Park Geun Hye was also accused of slow response to rescuing the victims.
One of the survivors, Jang Ae-jin, spoke on an interview years after such a traumatic event. She is now a college graduate after taking up a major in Emergency Medical Technology.
"Originally, my dream was to become a pre-school teacher, but after the Sewol Tragedy, I grew an interest in this field," she said. She was in her sophomore year during that time.
She believes that during that moment, she felt a lot of help came, and she thinks it was a responsibility for her to give back. She also recalled how excited they were to go for a field trip. Before boarding the ship, they were told that they might not push through due to the foggy weather condition, yet they continued to move forward.
