Billboard recently released their nomination predictions for the upcoming GRAMMYs. With three months left in the eligibility period, they took a look at potential nominees and how likely they are to be nominated, citing if they are the "Best Bets," have a "Good Chance," or are "Within Reach."
The magazine predicts that a SuperM nomination for "Best New Artist" is within reach. Billboard stated, "SuperM has a chance of becoming the first K-pop group to be nominated in this category with its self-titled EP, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200."
Notably, they are the only K-Pop act to be added to the whole predictions list. No K-pop group or soloist was included in the "Best New Artist' category, as well as the "Album of the Year" category, the "Record of the Year" category, and the "Song of the Year" category.
Billboard also noted, however, that there are many strong candidates for this award, including Polo G, Saweetie, NLE Choppa, and Lil Mosey - the latter two are still teenagers and all of them, like SuperM, have hip-hop influences. Hit-maker Arizona Zervas, whose "Roxanne" went viral, is also likely to be nominated. Sufaces, an electronic pop-duo, SHAED, Trevor Daniel, and Benee are within reach to a Grammy nomination.
"Best Bets" for a "Best New Artist" nomination includes Megan Thee Stallion, Summer Walker, Doja Cat, and Tones and I. The most notable nomination on the list is Doja Cat, whose breakout single "Say So" went viral on social media. The singer then released a remix of the song, which featured Nicki Minaj.
The "Good Change" possible nominations are Ingrid Andress, Gabby Barret, Rex Orange Country, and Conan Gray. The two most notable contenders are Rex Orange County - who featured on Tyler, The Creator's album - and Conan Gray, who has even earned praise from renowned artist Taylor Swift.
With such talented artists as possible contenders, the competition looks fierce. With the eligibility period ending on August 31, we will see then who makes the nominees list.
SuperM consists of members from different SM Entertainment boy groups: Taemin of SHINee, Kai and Bakehyun of EXO, and Taeyong and Mark of NCT 127, and Ten and Lucas of NCT's Chinese unit, WayV. Formed to be the Avengers of K-pop, the SM Entertainment and Capitol Records chose to debut a group with talented and already established K-Pop idols to promote.
SuperM debuted in 2019 with their self-titled album and the title song "Jopping," which charted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. In April 2020, SuperM stated they are preparing for a comeback, but no release date has been set.
