People on social media can be very rough on K-pop idols and celebrities in general. A lot of public figures have been criticized by the public and internet community for several things: for example, dating. Celebrities have also faced accusations for being untruthful.
Here are few other K-pop idols who have been reprimanded for telling lies to netizens.
KIM JAEJOONG (formerly from JYJ)
Jaejoong created many headlines when he "verified" that he has been diagnosed with the coronavirus (COVID-19) on April Fool's.
On his SNS, he wrote:
"I confirm that I have coronavirus.
Working and living while completely ignoring all the precautionary measures issued by the government and everyone around me has been irresponsible of me.
Just how huge the actions of one person might be affecting the entire population. I sincerely apologize to those who might have been infected by me.
The dumb decisions I made, that's how I became so. I continued to live and thought it was never going to happen to me. I'm currently admitted to the hospital.
I presently feel thankful and remorseful, reflecting on my past. There's so much I would like to say, There's so much that I want to see."
Jaejoong, however, produced far more headlines when he confirmed that it was all just an April Fool's prank.
This did not sit well enough with people on social media, and he was harshly criticized by both Japanese and Korean online users for making such a "prank." All of Jaejoong's activities in Japan were also suspended due to this controversy.
JESSICA JUNG (formerly from SNSD)
When Jessica was rumored to be having her solo career in Korea in 2016, online users were not too proud and happy. Most netizens denounced her after she departed from Girls' Generation for actually trying to make a return in Korea, and for lying about her career choices.
YEWON (formerly from Jewelry)
In 2015, news came out that there was an event that happened between Lee Tae Im and Yewon, where Yewon was talking to Lee Tae Im. That led Lee Tae Im to begin shouting and swearing at Yewon. Yewon would afterward deny those claims, as she said she never spoke to Lee Tae Im informally.
A footage depicting the event was however released. The clip confirmed that Yewon spoke to Lee Tae Im informally, which triggered Lee Tae Im to begin shouting and swearing at Yewon.
After figuring out that Yewon had been lying about her statements, she was widely criticized by many people on social media.
SUNYE (formerly from Wonder Girls)
Sunye officially confirmed in 2012 that she would marry her current husband, James Park, who is a Korean-Canadian. Sunye then agreed to leave Wonder Girls before her contract ended. She also conveyed her hopes and aspirations of wanting to stay for some time in Canada.
Many people on social media criticized her for these actions because they felt she was just leaving her band by not completing her collective bargaining agreement.
When it was announced that Sunye signed a contract with an entertainment group when people assumed she would spend most of her time as a non-celebrity, social media users bashed her.
