BTS recently announced its collaboration with Baskin-Robbins Korea. Today, the "BTS 7" cake was finally unveiled to the public. It's a number seven-shaped cake made up of seven varieties of ice cream flavor.
Together with the "BTS 7" cake release, the famous ice cream and cake specialty store also gave out "BTS 7 Signal Light" for those who have pre-ordered the cake. The "BTS 7 Signal Light" is a number seven-shaped BTS merchandise that can be later purchased through the store for about $3 US dollars or 3,900 Korean won. Keep in mind that this price is only for those who decide to buy the "BTS 7" cake. So technically, the cake and light merch go hand-in-hand.
ARMYs worldwide were expecting the release of the Baskin-Robbins "BTS 7" cake, and now that it has been released, ARMYs had flooded social media with their reaction. Usually, ARMYs give good responses with BTS partnerships, like when BTS also partnered with Starbucks. However, this collaboration didn't sit well with the idol group's fanbase.
The ARMYs had voiced their frustrations on the Internet of how highly and unfairly priced the cake is. The controversial "BTS 7" cake is priced at about 22 US dollars or 26,000 Korean won. This doesn't look that bad as most Baskin-Robbins ice cream cakes are priced the same, but the group's specialty cake is smaller in size.
To make this point clearer, let us measure the ice cream cakes by mL. Usually, Baskin-Robbins ice cream cakes priced at 26,000 KRW are made up of about 1,112 to 1,360 mL of ice cream batter. In comparison, the "BTS 7" cake's volume only rounds up to about 720 mL.
ARMYs were also upset at the simplicity of the cake. They thought there would be unique flavors made for the group since the company is collaborating with the number one boy group of Korea, but the "BTS 7" cake is nothing special. It's just an ice cream cake shaped into a number seven. That's it. No efforts were made into the cake design and making special flavors for each member of the group.
"Is this the cake? I thought a BTS collaboration cake would look more special."
"What is so special about this? It's made up of regular ice cream flavors and also comes in smaller sizes. Why is it more expensive? It makes no sense."
"The light stick should've been free, given the price of the cake."
On the other hand, Baskin-Robbins Korea has released a statement to answer the ARMYs and netizens' criticisms. The company explained that the ice cream blocks that made up the "BTS 7" cake were made by hand. So the high-pricing includes labor fees. Besides that, since it's a collaboration, only 30,000 "BTS 7" ice cream cakes will be up for sale. In other words, it's a limited edition cake.
Meanwhile, the "BTS 7" cake is still up for pre-order until July 23rd. The pre-ordered cake can be pick-up and delivered on the 24th and 25th. After that, regular sales will take over.
