Sunmi shared in a recent live broadcast that she was supposed to be the one to write the lyrics of TWICE's upcoming, highly-anticipated song "Cry For Me." She also revealed why she ended up not doing it.
At the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), TWICE surprised fans and viewers when the group performed its yet-to-be-released song titled "Cry For Me." The track and TWICE members both trended on Twitter just a short time after the performance. Fans even asked for an official release from JYP Entertainment, and recently, their wish has been granted when the track was announced to be launched as a pre-release track.
On a recent live broadcast of solo artist Sunmi via V Live, she talked to fans about random topics. She soon brought up TWICE's "Cry For Me," and shared something, making fans surprised. The idol said, "Did TWICE's song come out? Is 'Cry For Me' out? I saw their first stage at MAMA. I was asked to write the lyrics but I was so busy with my promotions at that time that I couldn't. Isn't it really good? I love it."
"Oh, it hasn't been officially released yet? I see. The song is so good though," Sunmi added.
Soloist Sunmi is known to be not only a singer but a songwriter as well. She has been credited for writing songs since 2015 when she rejoined the girl group Wonder Girls after withdrawing in 2010 to focus on her studies. She participated in writing the lyrics of "Rewind," "Back," and "Faded Love" for Wonder Girls' "Reboot" album. She also penned "Why So Lonely" and "To The Beautiful You" for the group's "Why So Lonely" album.
Sunmi even took part in writing her solo tracks "Gashina," "Heroine," "Siren," "Noir," "Lalalay," and many more. She also wrote her most recent song "Pporappipam." Moreover, the female artist was credited for working on the lyrics of "Gotta Go," which is the first original soundtrack of the web series "XX" where she also made a cameo appearance.
And because of her writing skills, she was able to win two "Song of the Year" awards at the Gaon Chart Music Awards. In particular, she took home the trophies in 2018 with "Gashina" and this year with "Lalalay."
Meanwhile, TWICE has shared the pre-save link of "Cry For Me" on Spotify. This will help fans immediately hear the song as soon as it is released. In addition, the first teaser photo for their upcoming track has been revealed on Dec. 11. The image shows a stem of a tree or plant that has long sharp thorns. Along with the picture, TWICE shared that the concept photo will be out on Monday, Dec. 14, while the official release of "Cry For Me" is on Friday, Dec. 18.
TWICE's "Cry For Me" will be launched especially for their beloved fans who showed love and interest when they performed it for the first time at 2020 MAMA. According to the group, they unveiled the song at the awards ceremony as they want to send some healing energy to the fans and viewers.
