The vocalist of the popular Filipino band, Mayonnaise's Monty Macalino, who underwent depression, surpassed life challenges with Rosé of BLACKPINK as his inspiration.
On Jan. 5, Korean media outlet Export News released an article about a band vocalist from the Philippines who is drawing attention from the public after releasing a song called "Park Chaeyoung" under the theme of Rosé, BLACKPINK's main vocalist.
Filipino singer Monty, who overcame an illness thanks to the BLACKPINK member, dedicated a heartwarming track, titled "Park Chaeyoung," Rosé's biological name.
Macalino, the leader of the band Mayonnaise, was taken to the hospital's emergency room in December 2019 due to acute cardiovascular disease while he was working on the performance scheduled for that year. At that time, he was burned out and weighed nearly 150 kilograms.
Ten days later, he was safely discharged from the hospital, but he was depressed due to concerns about a recurrence of the disease and his immobile physical condition.
The singer then revealed, "It was Korean dramas, K-pop, and mobile games that gave me strength when I couldn't move."
He also told the media that he was saved from depression and became motivated to prepare for a new album while making himself busy with Korean dramas and shows.
He managed to cope with his depression through the game PUBG, Korean entertainment show "Running Man," K-dramas like "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo," etc., which all became a part of his album.
Among them, it was BLACKPINK's Rosé who gave him the biggest boost. Due to this, the song "Park Chaeyoung," written in Korean on the band's new album, was released.
It made it easier for fans who don't understand the Filipino language as well, as the translation of the lyrics was also provided in English and Korean.
"BLACKPINK Rosé was the main muse of the album. I was inspired by her," he noted.
Macalino reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song while looking at the photos posted on Rosé's Instagram.
Meanwhile, he clarified that he's not trying to market himself to break into the K-pop scene, but purely a dedication for his motivation to live.
"It's not marketing with BLACKPINK or K-pop. I just wanted to make an important song for me. Because it was all I wanted to do after the day. I've been talking about her for the past few months, and I wanted to give this woman a song," he explained.
The music video for "Park Chaeyoung" was released on YouTube late last month, and has been viewed more than 20,000 times as of Jan. 5.
