Previously, on Nov. 2020, Eli revealed through his Instagram account that he and his wife were planning to get a divorce. Due to personal reasons, Eli was living in the United States while their son, Michael, remained with Ji Yeon Soo in South Korea. He ensured fans that despite the separation, he will do his best to be the father figure Michael deserves and will continue to go see him whenever he can. He also has good wishes for Michael and his mother.

Back in 2015, Eli revealed that he had married his wife in secret in 2014, without informing his family. Eli had a son in 2016 named Michael. The public initially expressed shock over the two's marriage after it was revealed that Ji Yeon Soo was eleven years older than Eli.
On the March 14, 2017, airing of "Mr. House Husband," Eli is seen in his home in the United States with his family, including his wife. It was the first time Eli has seen his parents in 10 years. During the episode, Eli's dad revealed that he had considered never seeing his son again when Eli revealed that he was in love with his wife.
His mother, on the other hand, revealed that Eli had informed her of the marriage before the news broke out. She was so distraught over it, she could not eat for a week. His mother was vehemently against their marriage due to their 11 year age difference, but she has since learned to accept their love for one another and has stated that her daughter-in-law and son are good-looking and kind.
Eli is not the first U-KISS member to get married and announce divorce. Previously, maknae Dongho announced that he had married his wife in Nov. 2015.
Two years later, however, he had filed for divorce from his wife and the mother of his child, Asher. According to Dongho's father, they separated due to differences in personalities.
The former U-KISS member previously received backlash after it was revealed that he had missed out on numerous special occasions in Asher's life, such as his birthday.
