Helena Bonham Carter’s Elizabeth Taylor Turn May Make Us Forget Lindsay Lohan

Helena Bonham Carter will play Elizabeth Taylor on BBC America’s “Burton and Taylor” opposite Dominic West’s Richard Burton on the heels of the Lifetime biopic “Liz and Dick” that starred Lindsay Lohan as the classic star Elizabeth Taylor. “Burton and Taylor” will be directed by Richard Laxton from a screenplay written by William Ivory.

Helena Bonham Carter’s Elizabeth Taylor in the upcoming TV film “Burton and Taylor” is the latest portrayal in a long and varied career of losing herself in roles. “Burton and Taylor” will focus on the original power couple’s troubled relationship as the appeared together in the 1983 revival of the Noel Coward's stage play “Private Lives,” which ran for 63 performances on Broadway before the stars’ lives proved too much for them to continue.

Carter and West will play Hollywood's most tempestuous couples, who were the highest-paid stars in Tinesltown in the three-hour drama. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were famously married and divorced from each other twice. The short run finally ended the enduring romance. The iconic couple’s time in the play was so troubled that they finally come to the understanding that their tempestuous relationship was beyond repair. Burton died the next year at the age of 58. Elizabeth Taylor died at age 79 in March 2011. The acting legends met on the set of of Cleopatra, while they were both married to other people, and first walked down the aisle in 1964. They were married for ten years, divorcing in 1974, but got remarried a year later

The first pictures of the new stars were released this week and they look picture-perfect. Helena Bonham Carter, who has starred in “The King’s Speech” and almost every movie made by Tim Burton since they became a couple, looks like a perfect stand-in, with her hair and makeup styled to replicate the Hollywood icon.

Helena Bonham Carter, 47, said “'I look nothing like her for a start, but it's about capturing the essence of them at a particular time. 'Elizabeth was and continues to be a fascinating woman and she was a huge star. There's no one comparable around now.'

The new movie will premiere on BBC America this fall.
