Brazil Trashes "Happy Prostitute" Ad Promoting STI, AIDS Testing

On Tuesday in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the health ministry retracted a website ad with the slogan "I am happy being a prostitute."

In honor of International Prostitution Day, the ad targeted prostitutes who live in fear of the AIDS epidemic to get tested for sexually-transmitted infections (STIs).

Opposers in Brazil criticized the slogan for promoting prostitution.

According to CBS, health minister Alexandre Padilha said, "I don't think this is a message the ministry should be sending. Our campaigns orient people how to avoid sexual transmitted diseases."

Before Padilha's statement, Reuters reported that law officials like federal deputy Liliam Sa were already rejecting the slogan.

"We are fighting childhood prostitution and here comes a campaign encouraging it," the deputy said in a congressional committee meeting.

BBC says that since the tropical country has dramatically risen in sex tourism, state and federal officials have become worried.

The campaign will continue with the "Not ashamed of using a condom" slogan but will discontinue the "happy prostitute" one.

CBS also reported that the president of the Association of Prostitutes in the city of Belo Horizonte revealed in Janurary that English classes are being offered to prostitutes to prep them for the 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup, and 2016 Olympic Games.
