One-Armed Volleyball Player Dies: Disabled High School Athlete Promised Brother He Would Wait Until 18th Birthday Ended At Midnight To Pass On His Deathbed

Eddie Nogay, the one-armed high school volleyball player from Brooklyn who helped his team make the city playoffs died of lung cancer on Tuesday morning, minutes after he promised his brother he would wait until his 18th birthday ended at midnight to pass on his deathbed.

Nogay, who played for Fort Hamilton High School despite undergoing chemotherapy for the cancer that led to his arm's amputation and was infiltrating his lungs, passed away at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Brooklyn, according to the New York Daily News.

Norgay died at 12:01 a.m., the New York Post reports.

"It was storybook," said Denis Dikarev, one of Nogay's teammates, told the New York Daily News.

"After it hit 12 o'clock - he made a promise to his brother to wait until his birthday finishes. Right when it hit 12 o'clock, that's when it happened. I really feel like he wanted it this way."

Over 30 of his teammates and friends were visiting Nogay at the hospital on Monday night to celebrate his 18th birthday but were ordered to stay in the lobby because he was in critical condition.

Nogay's family even arranged for him to have party room set up at 7 p.m. where his teammates, friends and coach could celebrate, according to the New York Daily News.

But Nogay was too ill to host the festivities.

Last month, Nogay snuck out of the hospital and showed up to his team's playoff game, scoring the first point of the game with a kill.

Scoring in the playoff game was his "dying wish," Coach Kim Tolve told the New York Post.

Nogay's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.
