World Cup 2014 Qualifiers Update: FIFA Gives Away 50,000 Free Tickets To Poor Groups In Brazil After Sports Minister Complains About High Prices. Is FIFA being too generous?

Brazil's Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo complained to FIFA about the high cost of tickets for the 2014 World Cup and was able to get 50,000 free tickets for poor communities and make half-price seats available to the elderly and students, according to Singapore Today.

"I spoke with FIFA representatives, stating that this was unacceptable, that the prices were so high," Rebelo told Singapore Today during an interview last week.

"This is really a celebration of the people of Brazil. Football is very important for the whole population in Brazil. So, I mentioned to FIFA representatives, how about that part of the population that cannot afford those expensive tickets?"

FIFA announced last week that it will release finalized ticket prices on July 1st for the 2014 World Cup and that sales for the tournament will begin on August 20th.

Brazil will be spending an estimated $3.5 billion on stadium construction and renovation, as it will be hosting both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, both of which are expected to boost the Latin American country's economy.

But Rebelo stressed the important of infrastructure changes and improvements benefitting all of the people of Brazil and being accessible to anyone, regardless of wealth status.

"The infrastructure investments are really geared towards all communities. The investments were planned for before, or regardless of, the World Cup and the Olympics," Rebelo told Singapore Today.

"In the 70s, Brazil built a lot of big stadiums and these stadiums were geared only towards football, nothing else. But the stadiums nowadays are completely different."
