Is BLACKPINK Lisa's Alcohol Advertisement 'Illegal'? Here's What Really Happened

In line with BLACKPINK Lisa's alcohol advertisement, Thai authorities have decided to investigate THIS reason, as well as whether the idol x Chivas Regal brand violated any laws.

Chivas Introduces BLACKPINK Lisa as First Asian Promotional Model

On March 15, blended Scotch whiskey brand Chivas Regal announced their partnership with global superstar BLACKPINK Lisa. Through this news, the idol became the first female Asian promotional model of the brand.

Following the announcement, the brand also revealed their new slogan "I RISE WE RISE," the collaboration campaign the "BOOMBAYAH singer will work with.

Regarding this collaboration, Lisa said:

"I have been passionate for the past few years and now I want to inspire others. In that sense, I didn't have to think about the collaboration proposal because this Chivas campaign is very similar to the value I pursued."

BLACKPINK Lisa's Advertisement for Chivas Regal Draws Flak For 'Violation of Law'

Following initial promotional materials, on March 17, Korean media Herald Economy reported that the Thai authorities have decided to investigate the widespread distribution of photos as well as videos of BLACKPINK Lisa's alcohol advertisements through social media platforms and outlets.

In particular, Thailand's Ministry of Health's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ordered the Alcohol Control Committee (OACC) to lead the investigation of who's responsible for the circulation of alcohol ads featuring the Thai K-pop idol.

To explain why this is a big deal, the country of Thailand is known for its Buddhist teachings and beliefs, and one of the laws they promulgated is the prohibition of alcohol advertising on all media platforms.

Bangkok Post and Nation that Lisa is a Thai who's working as an ambassador for a famous whiskey company in Asia. Thus, people focused on whether the idol is right to advertise alcohol and whether she will be punished like other celebrities.

In this matter, OACC released their statement, saying:

"Lisa's appearance in alcohol advertising may not have violated other countries' laws, as some countries do not regulate alcohol advertising like Thailand."

While Lisa will not face any backlash among international countries, however, attention is focused on what will happen to the female star in Thailand as it was not stated by OACC.

According TO Article 32 of Thailand's Liquor Control Act in 2008, Thais are prohibited to advertise alcohol, particularly the one where the person holds the actual alcohol or shows a certain liquor brand. On top of that, encouraging others to drink in Thailand is extremely prohibited as well.

If a Thai violated this law, it may result in a fine of 500,000 baht (about 18 million KRW) or imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
