7 K-pop Songs With Lyrics Based on Idols' Personal Experience

Inspirations in making songs can come from various things, one of the most common concepts is real life. When a track is based on personal experience, the songwriter's genuine feelings can be felt and many listeners can relate. If you are wondering which K-pop songs fall under this category, below are some of the examples.

7 K-pop Songs Inspired by Singer's Real-Life Story: WINNER Mino, MAMAMOO Hwasa, More!

WINNER Mino "Fear"

This 2015 song is a collaboration between WINNER Mino and BIGBANG Taeyang. Mino created this track for his semi-final round on the competition program "Show Me The Money 4," along with Block B Zico.

"Fear" expresses WINNER Mino's honest feelings. Particularly, what it feels like to be a son and a member of an idol group. Every line in the song reveals the things that cause him to be afraid. With this track, Mino advanced to the final round of "SMTM4."

MAMAMOO Hwasa "Twit"

MAMAMOO Hwasa's "Twit" is based on her love life. She told Yoo Hee Yeol during her guesting on "Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook" that "twit" is English slang for a foolish person.

Although it may sound like an offensive song, Hwasa clarified that "Twit" has a positive meaning. It describes a person who foolishly loves her far too much that he becomes a fool.

She further explained that the man in the song is someone who "purely and innocently" gives Hwasa his love like a fool.

"But because I have lots of things that I want to attain and too much ambition, this man that I'm calling a fool ends up becoming second to my other priorities," MAMAMOO Hwasa said.

She went on to say, "So I think it's partly about telling that person, 'You're a fool,' to justify my behavior."

Heize "Don't You Know"

Another example of a K-pop song based on personal experience is "Don't You Know" by Heize. Like the songsm above, this is also centered on the singer's love life. The only difference is that Heize was in an official relationship.

According to the female idol, "Don't You Know" is about the boyfriend she had at the time she relocated to Seoul and had financial problems. Heize shared that her lover often gives her gifts, which she still keeps in her home.

The singer added that she is upset about the fact that her ex-boyfriend does not have anything memorable from her since she was unable to give him presents throughout their relationship.

BIGBANG "This Love"

Written by band member G-Dragon, "This Love" is a remake of Maroon 5's song of the same name. Like the original lyrics that talk about Adam Levine's breakup with his ex-girlfriend, BIGBANG's rendition contains G-Dragon's experience in love. Reportedly, the rapper penned the lyrics for "This Love" just 30 minutes after the girl he likes rejected him when he was still a trainee.

AKMU "Last Goodbye"

"Last Goodbye" by AKMU is also inspired by an idol's personal experience. In particular, it is about the breakup story of band member Lee Chan Hyuk, who also wrote the lyrics for the song.

During AKMU's appearance on "Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook," Chan Hyuk revealed that he cried while writing the song. Her sister and bandmate Lee Soo Hyun added that she even saw her brother crying while recording the song.

IU "Voicemail"

IU's "Voicemail" is another entry to our list of K-pop songs written based on the singer's personal experience.

Back in 2013, IU guested on MBC Music's "Picnic Live," which is where she disclosed that her track "Voicemail" reflects her experience with love. Like what happened to G-Dragon, IU also got dumped because the boy she likes does not feel the same way as her.

Fun fact, one of the lines in the song says "The recording time has already hit two minutes and thirty seconds." Right when these lyrics were sung, the actual time into the track is two minutes and 30 seconds.

Lee Hi "Breathe"

"Breathe" serves as a gift from late SHINee member Jonghyun to Lee Hi. He wrote the song himself. During Lee Hi's appearance on SBS's "Party People," she shared that this track was released at the time she had difficulty breathing. She was suffering from slight panic disorder, and she felt like she was suffocating.

The female idol released "Breathe" with the hope of bringing comfort to those who also have problems with breathing.
