LE SSERAFIM Sakura Shows Support for LGBTQ+ Community

LGBTQ+ has been a taboo topic within the Korean community for a long time, hence, not many Korean stars openly speak about it except for a select few.

While there are Korean stars who have admitted to being part of the LGBTQ+ community, it still remains a sensitive topic. However, former IZ*ONE member and current LE SSERAFIM member Sakura never hesitated to express her support.

Back in 2017, Sakura was a regular contributor for the popular Japanese magazine SPA!, with one of her most well-known article being a review of the LGBTQ+ movie, "Close Knit" (Karera Ga Honki De Amu Toki Wa in Japanese).

The movie focuses on the life of an 11-year-old girl who forms a close knit bond with her uncle's transgender girlfriend Rinko, after she was abandoned by her own mother.

For her article on SPA! reviewing the movie, Sakura expresses how "there is no right or wrong answer" when it comes to love, and that love is possible between all genders and that there is no set rule for it.

However, just like Korea, LGBTQ+ is also a taboo topic in Japan. But Sakura argues that there is a strong need to develop a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ community in the country.

"When it comes to falling in love, between who and who should it take place? Is the correct answer a male and female?" Sakura wrote in her piece.

She continued, "There is no right or wrong answer for human emotions. Love between men, love between women, it is find if it exists. And in my opinion, Japan needs to deepen its understanding of homosexuality."

Sakura then praises transgenders who fight against discrimination in society by accepting who they are and continuously living how they want to.

LE SSERAFIM Sakura Hopes to Make Music About 'Universal Love'

Now, years later, Weverse Magazine interviewed Sakura, where they mentioned the idol's past article on SPA!, and shared how they were impressed with her movie review.

Looking back at that time, Sakura revealed that idols were cautious of voicing out their thoughts on the topic. However, she refused to let criticisms bother her and expressed her support instead.

"There was actually an atmosphere of caution around idols speaking their minds around that time. But I thought I could say that anyway. Idols don't just sing and dance on stage - they can also be role models for people, and someone who is always by their side for others," Sakura said.

She adds that due to her status as a celebrity, she wanted to use her influence to bring awareness on the topic, saying, "So I wanted to let people know there were others with these kinds of thoughts, and I also thought that if an idol was talking about the issue that even more people could become aware of it, too."

She concludes by sharing her hope to someday release music centering around "universal love." "Some day our group might sing a song about love and I have this idea that I'd like to sing about love that's universal," Sakura said.
