Rolling Stone Face Intense Backlash for Disrespectful Remarks Towards BLACKPINK Jisoo and Lisa

Back in May, Rolling Stone Korea excited BLINKs (BLACKPINK's fandom) when they dropped BLACKPINK's group and individual pictorials for the magazine as they headlined the cover of their June 2022 issue. The magazine also received praise for not only the members' gorgeous pictorials but also for their exclusive interviews that answered some frequently asked questions.

However, on July 11, Rolling Stone Korea came under fire after the magazine released an article online, in which fans deemed as disrespectful towards members Jisoo and Lisa.

When the article was released, fans couldn't help but be angered with how Rolling Stone Korea described Jisoo and Lisa. The magazine stated that Jisoo doesn't have as much talent as the rest of her members.

Rolling Stone said:

"Although she does not possess the most outstanding talent in the group as a vocalist or dancer, her growth is much more apparent."

The article also spoke about Lisa. And rather than talking about her talent and achievements, they centered on her ethnicity, which they described as "exotic," and that her pronunciation prevented any "kinks" in their songs.

Rolling Stone said:

"The unique presence of Lisa, created by her overpowering physical charm and exotic appearance, [...] highlight her identity as a solo artist. [...] her pronunciation in those songs is natural enough to prevent the listener from sensing any kinks from the foreign member of the group."

Unsurprisingly, the members' descriptions were met with negative feedback, and BLINKs demanded that Rolling Stone Korea respect the members and apologize for their article.

Rolling Stone Issues Apology for Disrespecting Jisoo and Lisa

On July 12, Rolling Stone Korea issued a statement through their Instagram, where they apologized to both BLACKPINK and the fans for the article.

In their apology, Rolling Stone Korea admitted that the words they used were inappropriate and that they would be revising the article both online and in the next edition of the print.

Rolling Stone said in their statement:

"Hello everyone, this is Rolling Stone Korea.

We have listened, have read, and have taken in all the considerations and remarks regarding the recent BLACKPINK column. We admittedly noted that we used inappropriate choices of words and context that led to this misunderstanding.

A revised and modified column will be published in the second edition of the print next week. The revised column will be on our official website. We apologize to the artists for causing concerns. We ask for your patience with us. Thank you."

Despite their statement, BLINKs continue to criticize the well-known magazine, as they believe the damage to their credibility has already been done.
