Fancams are videos that highlight K-pop idols during performances or events. While many garnered favorable reactions, some received negative feedback, such as the ones listed below.
Here are K-pop fancams that went viral for the wrong reasons.
K-pop Fancams That Went Viral for the Wrong Reasons
aespa Ningning - 'Black Mamba' Fancam
aespa Ningning's "Black Mamba" fancam not only became a hot topic on social media but it also made headlines. The reason was that a staff member was heard saying a rude comment 10 seconds into the video.
A voice could be heard commenting, "It's uncoordinated."
The fancam was taken during aespa's performance on SBS's "Inkigayo" on Nov. 29. SBS responded to the controversy, saying that they have confirmed a conversation unrelated to aespa's stage was recorded and included in the final fancam.
BLACKPINK Jennie - 'As If It's Your Last' Fancam
BLACKPINK Jennie often becomes the subject of heated discussions for various reasons, including her "lazy" dancing - and this fancam is one of the examples.
Jennie was criticized in this "As If It's Your Last" fancam for dancing lazily even though it was just the group's rehearsal for a concert.
TWICE Momo - 'I Can't Stop Me' Fancam
Another K-pop fancam of a female idol that went viral for the wrong reason is TWICE Momo's "I Can't Stop Me" on Mnet's "M Countdown."
In this video, Momo is wearing an outfit that some netizens found sexy as it overexposes her thighs. Because of this fan, the TWICE member was sexualized.
Red Velvet Joy - 'Really Bad Boy' Fancam
This "Really Bad Boy" fancam of Red Velvet Joy garnered much attention due to the idol appearing startled when the fireworks went off right after the group's performance. This happened at the 2019 Iseul Live Festival on May 11. Joy could be seen covering her ears and running to the side of the stage.
On the same day, the Red Velvet member took to Instagram to apologize for what happened. She explained that she was scared of fireworks, so she was shocked when they exploded in front of her.
BLACKPINK Lisa - 'Swalla' Fancam
BLACKPINK Lisa is another K-pop idol who was sexualized in her own fancam, but for a different reason from TWICE Momo.
In Lisa's "Swalla," the Thai idol could be seen executing steps too sexy for others, especially the part where she lied on her chest and moved her behind several times.
Girls' Generation Taeyeon - 'Run Devil Run' Fancam
This fancam of Taeyeon when Girls' Generation was performing "Run Devil Run" at the Lotte World Ice Rink is probably well-known among SONEs.
This fancam captured the shocking incident of a sasaeng fan going on the stage and pulling Taeyeon as if he were kidnapping her.
As of this writing, this fancam has accumulated 2.5 million views on YouTube.
TWICE Jeongyeon - 'Alcohol-Free' Fancam
Everyone knows that TWICE Jeongyeon gained weight since she began taking a hiatus due to health reasons. While many fans still showed their support for the idol, some weren't happy about her figure.
This "Alcohol-Free" fancam of Jeongyeon went viral among netizens, who body-shamed her.
IVE Yujin - 'ELEVEN' fancam
IVE Yujin's "ELEVEN" fancam garnered attention due to the questionable styling choice she had for the stage.
For the group's performance on "Show! Music Core," Ahn Yunjin was seen wearing a black shirt, skirt, and belt. While this seemed normal, one part of her outfit drew the most attention: a blue bra was layered over her shirt.
This sparked backlash, as she was only 18 years old at the time. People believe using underwear as a stage costume was wrong, especially given how young she was at the time.
DIA Eunjin - 'Will you go out with me' Fancam
This DIA Eunjin fancam, performing in Yeonchon, has over 3.2 million views, but for all the wrong reasons.
While she started the performance happy, things soon started going downhill for the idol. However, halfway through the performance, it became apparent that she was going through an uncomfortable wardrobe malfunction; her bra began to slide down her shirt.
Though it must have been uncomfortable, Eunjin finished the performance with a smile on her face, showing her professionalism.
IVE Jang Wonyoung - 'ELEVEN' Fancam
Jang Wonyoung "ELEVEN" fancam during the 2021 KBS Gayo Daechukje went viral for two reasons: her weight and supposed favoritism.
During the stage, many claimed Jang Wonyoung's stage outfit was flashier than the other members. Instead of just wearing white shorts, hers was layered with a white tulle skirt, making her stand out more. People believe her label was trying too hard to push her as the group's face.
People were also hypercritical of Jang Wonyoung's weight at the time. Those who watched her fan cam claimed her weight was not proportional to her height, and that her thin arms and legs were alarming.
NMIXX Jiwoo - 'TANK' Fancam
When NMIXX first debuted, Jiwoo received criticism from the public due to her figure. People believe she was "too big" to be an idol, and many claimed that her figure was not fitting that of an idol.
Criticisms reached an all-time high following this "TANK" fancam. For this stage, Jiwoo was wearing shorts with patterned tights (or a bodysuit) under. With a belt cinching her waist and puffy shoulders, the outfit did not flatter her body. People slammed her for being too "round" and urged her to lose weight.
GFRIEND SinB - 'Mermaid' Fancam
During a performance of "Mermaid" in 2016, SinB (formerly of GFRIEND) was seen struggling to stay awake as they performed. Throughout the performance, she is seen looking more and more tired. Her member, Yuju, was next to her constantly checking in on her.
Sadly, she was unable to stay conscious and ultimately passed out from what appears to be exhaustion. The members were seen quickly rushing to her side, and the managers rushed on stage to escort her out.
