In a broadcast, Sungmin, who has been an inactive Super Junior member, hinted at his plans in the music industry.
Will he finally return to the group? Here's what he said.
Sungmin Expresses Desire To Become Trot Singer – Will He Ever Return To Super Junior?
On December 29, Super Junior Sungmin appeared and challenged, TV Chosun's trot singing competition, "Mr. Trot 2 - The Beginning of a New Legend."
Among the participants, Sungmin particularly received massive attention for his reason for joining the show. After all, the singer initially debuted as a K-pop idol and member of "Hallyu Kings" Super Junior.
In fact, when he appeared on the stage, F.T. Island Lee Hongki and former Wanna One Kang Daniel, both idols as well who were sitting in the judges' seats, were surprised.

Sungmin then introduced himself, saying:
"Now, I'm a trot sprout Sungmin who wants to be a real trot singer. I'm challenging myself to find my identity as a singer."
He then confessed to the psychological hardships he had during his hiatus.
"It was mentally difficult because I had a break during my activities (in Super Junior). I thought, 'Will there be a day when I can't sing if I can't continue to stand on the stage like this?'"
Hinting at his future plan, Sungmin stated:
"This is the reason I want to be a person who sings and performs on stage. I want to shine on stage as a singer rather than a celebrity."
With this, ELFs (Super Junior fandom) expressed their sentiments about the idol, who opts to pursue a path as a trot singer than returning to his idol career.
Fans who saw his interview also claimed that these words from Sungmin also hinted at his answer to questions about when he will return to Super Junior after a five-year hiatus.
Although standing on the same stage is still possible, fans conveyed that Super Junior's full-fledged promotion with Sungmin is far from fans' sight anymore.
Meanwhile, after the show, Sungmin, unfortunately, received 11 hearts only being named on the preliminary acceptance list.
Despite this, the judges praised him, Jin Sung, saying:
"The stage is very pretty and cute. There is a structure and class shown on the stage. I also have my own conviction that the older generation who like trot likes it."
Reason Sungmin Was 'Banned' From Super Junior Activities
As a brief context, the main reason Sungmin wasn't active as Super Junior was that he was "banned" from joining the team's activities after marrying musical actress Kim Saeun in 2014.
At the time, an idol marrying and having children was still a huge taboo, causing Korean fans to turn their backs on him.
K-ELFs claimed that they felt "betrayed" and "deceived" since 2014 is an important year for the group.
During that time, most Super Junior members will enter the military in 2015, but Sungmin decided to marry.
