BoA Criticized For Vocals & Lines in GOT the beat — But Her Fandom Has the Best Response

Following the pre-release of GOT the beat's "Stamp On It," BoA has been earning criticism for her lines and vocals.

Here's why.

Is BoA Standing Out Too Much in GOT the beat? K-pop Icon Receives Divided Opinions

Recently, BoA sparked a heated discussion over her role in GOT the beat.

GOT (Girls on Top) is a large-scale project launched by SM Entertainment comprised of its artists. The first unit to be introduced was GOT the Beat, a seven-member project girl group consisting of BoA, Girls' Generation Taeyeon & Hyoyeon, Red Velvet Seulgi & Wendy, and aespa Karina & Winter.

On December 29 last year, SM confirmed that the unit will have their comeback with their first mini-album, "Stamp On It." The title track of the same name was then pre-released on January 1, through a free year-end concert, "SMTOWN LIVE 2023: SMCU PALACE@KWANGYA."

K-pop fans responded to the song and performance enthusiastically. However, there were divided opinions about the members' vocals and line distribution that allegedly favors more to BoA.

In online communities, the "Queen of K-pop" has been receiving malicious comments following GOT the beat's pre-release.

"When I listen to BoA's songs, I don't feel this way, but after listening to her in GOT the beat, it's a voice I f**king don't want to hear."

Shockingly, the post amassed over 165,000 views, with about 1,000 people agreeing with it.

According to them, the two reasons they are raising their brows against BoA is her vocals. Critics emphasized her nasal singing, which doesn't suit the other members' clear voices.

  • "I can't understand her pronunciation."
  • "I am initially fine with her but when she goes mid to high notes, her nasally singing gets too severe."
  • "I don't like her high notes and hoarse voice."

Second, they stated that BoA was given a lot more lines than the other members. Critics expressed frustration that the K-pop legend has a lot of killing parts, instead of her juniors.

  • "She stands out too much."
  • "It's interesting because all of the members have a distinct voice but when you close your eyes and listen to the song, only BoA stands out too much. It seems like she doesn't fit well with the group."
  • "BoA made the song sound like we're in the 90s."

Not long after, BoA's fandom (Jumping BoA) jumped on her defense, and called out the netizens for attacking the idol when she contributed a lot to the group.

  • "GOT the beat is NOT GOT the beat without BoA."
  • "Not people with idols who can't sing live complaining about the mother of K-pop."
  • "People think BoA needs the group when she can be a whole group playing all the positions just by herself."

GOT the beat 'Stamp On It' Release Date

The song will be an R&B hip-hop-based dance song that expresses the story of reaching the top of the fierce stage competition, the performance consisting of point movements that seem to stamp according to the name of the song and dynamic movements that feel the synergy of the members doubles its charm.

Ahead of the official release, teaser images featuring colorful visuals of members were released on Girls On Top's official SNS account, raising expectations for the much-anticipated comeback after about a year.
