aespa to Join 'Water Bomb' Festival for the First Time – But Why Are People Against NingNing's Participation?
Meanwhile, Waterbomb is the largest music and water-themed festival in Korea; thus, it's normal to have water showers fall, and people normally shoot water guns at artists during the festival.
For these reasons, MYs are immediately opposed to NingNing joining the event.
In particular, it isn't that fans are against her performing with the other members, but they are against her being hurt after getting hit by water in her eyes.
NingNing, earlier in March, opened up through Vogue China about her eye condition, confessing that her right eye was impaired. She has eye drops she always carries to treat her poor eye health condition.
She said:
"I had surgery once when I was young, so I can barely see with my right eye. So I carry eye drops so that my eyes are not too dry."
According to Chinese media, NingNing suffers from Acanthamoeba keratitis, in which Acanthamoeba, a free-living ameba, penetrates the cornea and causes inflammation. This infection can be commonly get from tap water, unfiltered swimming pool water, river water, and seawater.
This is a rare disease and can lead to impaired vision during infection or worse, blindness.
At the previous Water Bomb event, several stars complained that they were in pain when the audience poured a heavy water gun attack on their faces.
In 2022, Jessi was seen being intensively sprayed with water guns on her face during the performance.
(G)I-DLE Jeon Soyeon and Shuhua also expressed frustration after being intensively aimed by water guns in their faces and complained of not being able to see for 30 seconds.
With this, some fans are hoping that aespa will reconsider their participation or at least give NingNing a protective gear for her eyes.
