MONSTA X Shownu Selected as Mnet's 'Street Woman Fighter' S2 Judge – Why Are People Unhappy?

MONSTA X Shownu will reportedly join the second season of hit Mnet's dance crew battle program, "Street Woman Fighter 2."

On June 11, an exclusive article by the Korean media outlet Sports DongA confirmed that the idol will join the show as one of the judges, along with other professional dancers and choreographers.

In particular, the show became extremely popular in the summer of 2021 that it created two other spinoffs of the show, including "Street Dance Girls Fighter" (female teenager version) and "Street Man Fighter," the show's male counterpart.

"Street Woman Fighter 2" is the fourth series and is set to premiere on August 22.

Following the news, K-pop fans, especially MONBEBEs (MONSTA X fandom), rejoiced that Shownu will once again lead a dance program to show his skills and talent.

However, some expressed strong disapproval of Shownu's participation as a judge for the reason that he is a K-pop idol.

Until now, the "Street Woman Fighter" series has been selecting K-pop idols, such as BoA, NCT Taeyong, Super Junior Eunhyuk, and 2PM Wooyoung, main idol dancers with extensive performance, directing experience or battle scene experience.

However, some complained about how the idols don't really give any professional inputs about the crews in the past; thus, they want Mnet to give the position instead to "actual" professional dancers and choreographers who have more experience in terms of street dancing.

International fans particularly implied that Shownu still has a lot to know and he's more fit to become an MC instead.

Amid criticism, Mnet unveiled a follow-up introduction to Shownu as SWF's judge on June 12, saying:

"Shownu, the "icon of strong and sexy performance," will join 'Street Woman Fighter 2' as a judge.

Shownu, who is the leader and main dancer of the globally popular group MONSTA X, and is gaining global popularity for his reliable and impressive performance, is drawing attention to his appearance in SWF2."

The PD Team of "Street Woman Fighter" also provided a quick overview of Shownu's credentials as a dancer, explaining the reason he was also selected to become a judge:

"Shownu is an artist with a global fandom as well as the main dancer of MONSTA X, which is well-known for its powerful performance. Since he participated as a judge in Mnet's 'CAP-TEEN' aired in 2020, Shownu's experience is expected to help dancers perform globally."

Sports DongA also wrote:

"Boasting his superior physicality, he is famous for his powerful performance and dance lines with vivid details. He worked as a dancer before his idol debut and also participated in the Mnet dance competition program "Hit the Stage" in 2016.

In 2020, he participated in Mnet's survival audition "CAP-TEEN" as a judge. Shownu is expected to show a great performance as a judge because he has a sense of entertainment on top of his sincerity about dance."
