Amid rising cases of K-pop idols being reported for alleged illegal drug use, Super Junior Siwon drew attention for a different reason.
Super Junior Siwon Sets Positive Example Among Idols Amid Rising Celebrities Illegal Drug Allegations
As the drug scandals surrounding actor Lee Sun Kyun and BIGBANG G-Dragon spread toward the entire entertainment industry, indiscriminate rumors are being produced.
Fake news and unconfirmed reports from unknown sources are being circulated, causing the names of K-pop idols who are not related to the allegations to be mentioned — including BTS.
While most of the artists embroiled in illegal drug use immediately denied such rumors, the music scene is once again in chaos.
However, there is a K-pop idol who is drawing attention among netizens and media, who is said to be one of the stars who will never be involved in such drug accusations.
Rather, this idol served as a positive example to the younger celebrities, by being one of the people to promote anti-drugs.
Who is this idol? He's none other than Super Junior Siwon!
Earlier in July, Siwon was appointed as the new advisor of the Korea Association Against Drug Abuse under Chairman Kim Pilyeo. He would be participating in the campaign to prevent misuse and abuse of drugs and to fight illegal drugs and promising related activities.
During his appointment, the male idol expressed his ambition:
"We will actively participate in various public relations projects with the Korea Anti-Drug Movement Headquarters in the future to inform teenagers of proper information and harmful effects of drugs and to prevent drug misuse and abuse."
Regarding why he was chosen, Chairman Kim highlighted Siwon's "upright" and "righteous" personality and image, saying:
"When celebrities and other social celebrities are caught and punished for drug administration, teenagers often follow due to the 'Werther effect,' which causes serious social controversy, and I am happy that a righteous and upright personality like Choi Siwon will be at the forefront of the anti-drug movement."
Amid the news of celebrities using drugs, the role of Siwon is important, thus, he's drawing attention even more from the media right now.
From G-Dragon to BTS: K-pop Idols Embroiled in Illegal Drug Use Accusations
Following actor Lee Sun Kyun on October 25, the news of singer G-Dragon's additional charges of drug administration was announced. The next day, on the 26th, the entire entertainment industry caught fire due to the spread of baseless rumors related to the drug scandal.
First of all, Kim Chaewon, a member of the girl group LE SSERAFIM became a victim of groundless rumors. The idol recently suspended her activities due to her health problems but people were quick to link her temporary hiatus to the drug case.
As a result, Source Music quickly denied it and said:
"The related rumors are not true at all."
(G)I-DLE Jeon Soyeon was also mentioned amid illegal drug use accusations and Cube Entertainment immediately took action.
"We will strongly respond to posts spreading false facts."
To make matters worse, even the global boy group BTS could not avoid rumors. Fake news continued that some of the BTS members who took a break were regular customers of Gangnam entertainment establishments where Lee Sun Kyun frequented.
In the end, Big Hit Music stated:
"BTS is irrelevant to the rumor and is not true at all. We will respond strongly to the indiscriminate spread of rumors."
