Following "Wife's" release, the five-member group didn't disappoint with its unique concept and symbol, provoking fans with its lyrics.

In particular, "Wife" is a pop track based on a bubblegum pass, with a unique yet sophisticated sound. It became even more significant as Soyeon, (G)I-DLE leader, participated in writing, composing, and arranging the songs in the album.

In the music video released simultaneously with the soundtrack, (G)I-DLE members all wear the same mint-colored wigs, catching the viewers' attention.

However, this is not the reason it became a sizzling topic online, but due to the lyrics that allegedly spark sensationalism.

Lyrics such as, "I'll give you some more, wipe your drool," "Pick the cherry on top," and "If you get it now, you should try it now," are said to be openly reminiscent of sexual behaviors.

As a response, netizens are divided into two groups. The critiques express concern, saying that the lyrics are explicit for children.

(G)I-DLE's target is the adult audience with their mature concepts; thus, parents are worried that kids will hear overly-sensational and inappropriate lyrics regardless of the intention.

K-Media Explain (G)I-DLE's 'Wife': What Really is the Message Behind Group's Song?

According to K-media and fans, the song brings more diversity in interpretation, more than just it being sexual. It is argued that the song tackles the implications of the women's liberation movement to break down the patriarchy.

Listening to the song begins to portray a traditional wife with the lyrics, "I cook cream soup, taste is Coco Loco // Want me your wife, but she is mm, mm, mm // I clean your room, it's so twinkle, twinkle // Want me your wife, but she is mm, mm, mm."

The term "wife" often refers to a passive object corresponding to "husband," who has the power under the patriarchal system.
But (G)I-DLE sings the overthrow of the patriarchy from the beginning.

Herald Economy stated:

"This song is deeply intentional. (G)I-DLE broke away from the passive restraint given to women and portrayed them as more independent individuals, while at the same time writing lyrics that were superficially sensational, as was controversial in some quarters."

Segye Ilbo added:

"In particular, they have interpreted that the lyrics of 'Wife' in terms of girls' movements so far are not just expressing vulgar words, but expressing opposition to the image of a standard wife.

A fan of (G)I-DLE interpreted that the lyrics of 'Wife,' based on the phrase, 'but I'm not' written in the album introduction, contradict the stereotype that 'women are a group that cleans, cooks and makes men feel good."

Neither (G)I-DLE nor Cube Entertainment, their agency, have provided a meaningful, official explanation for this song.
