Did LE SSERAFIM Copy Olivia Rodrigo For 'EASY' Release?
On January 25, 2024, LE SSERAFIM released the trailer for their upcoming comeback, "EASY." Now, weeks after its release, people claim the song sounds eerily similar to an Olivia Rodrigo release.
On February 6, 2024, a post titled "LE SSERAFIM's new song is too similar to Olivia Rodrigo's song" was posted to a popular South Korean online community forum.
There, the user shared a clip from the trailer. Specifically, there is a part in which the girls start chanting over a pop rock instrumental. The author claims the song sounds extremely similar to a song from Olivia Rodrigo's album "GUTS" called "bad idea, right?"
The user also pointed out that LE SSERAFIM was previously accused of copying Rosalia's songs, styling, and concept. Additionally, users on X claim some songs from the audio sampler sound like Justin Bieber and SZA.
The post soon drew attention from internet users. Many thought it was too ambigious to call it flat-out plagiarism, but they copied and took enough inspiration for people to notice the similarities. Others claimed they noted how much the two songs sounded alike the moment they heard "EASY."
Others defended LE SSERAFIM, stating K-pop always uses mainstream pop music as a reference.
Some comments read,
- "It's too ambigious to say they copied it, but it does seem like they are taking a lot of influence from Western artists."
- "I heard it the moment I listened to the trailer."
- "But doesn't K-pop always use pop as inspiration?"
- "I wouldn't say it's plagiarized, but they have copied it just enough so that people wouldn't assume they copied."
