In a broadcast, LE SSERAFIM Sakura shared why she didn't become the group's leader despite being the most experienced and the eldest. Who took her place instead?
Kim Chaewon Opens Up About Pressure of Being LE SSERAFIM's Leader
On February 20, the YouTube channel DdeunDdeun uploaded the 10th episode of its web entertainment show, "mini-Just an Excuse," hosted by MC Yoo Jae Suk.
On this day, LE SSERAFIM Sakura and Kim Chaewon appeared as special guests, wherein they shared various stories and anecdotes about being a K-pop idol.
Among the behind-the-scene stories that they shared, the two leading female idols talked about the selection process of their leader.
In particular, it is common for a K-pop group to have the oldest one as their leader, especially if they have the longest experience and training. A leader should also take care of and help their younger co-members, which is a position suitable for the eldest members.
Interestingly, despite not being the oldest member, Kim Chaewon became the leader of LE SSERAFIM and is actively fulfilling the position.
When asked how they voted for the leader, Kim Chaewon explained:
"There was a recommendation from the company, and when they asked, I said, 'I like it, too.' I feel like, 'I want to lead the team well,' so I became the leader."
When asked what's the most difficult thing about it, the female idol responded:
"I think the position 'leader' of this team itself carries a bit of weight. Thanks to that, I think that's also why I'm working harder."
Regarding feeling pressure, she added:
"There is such pressure, but I actually think it is okay to have that little bit of pressure like that."
Sakura Reveals She Decided Not to Become Leader For THIS Reason
In the same broadcast, MC Yoo carefully asked Kim Chaewon and Sakura, why the latter wasn't selected, who is the eldest of the group.
Hearing this, Sakura revealed that before signing the contract with HYBE, the only condition that she asked from the company was to not make her the leader.
"The condition I had before signing the contract was to not make me the leader."
She furthered:
"It’s not because I’m scared that I might be the leader, but because I’m the eldest member of the team, I think my younger co-members might find it difficult if I take the lead."
On the flip side, Kim Chaewon tried to look at the bright side and added:
"But I think this is actually good. There is a leader and the eldest sister. If the leader carries everything, it can get tiring. Every time that happens, I ask my eldest sister (Sakura)."
