Leeteuk Exposes How Collab Dance Challenges Are Filmed: ‘Idols Take Number From...'

Contrary to fans' expectations about idols genuinely interacting during collab dance challenges, Super Junior Leeteuk exposed the truth of how these videos are filmed, behind the scenes.

On March 27, MBC's "Radio Star" featured Super Junior members Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, and Eunhyuk, where they talked about various topics as 19-year veteran idols.

Just then, Leeteuk mentioned the changing idol culture, which they felt and experienced after re-debuting in the fifth-gen era through the sub-unit Super Junior-LSS with Shindong and Siwon.

Super Junior Leeteuk Reveals How Collab Dance Challenges Are Filmed

Leeteuk started by reminiscing the second-gen era, when K-pop artists would go to music shows to film their stage, and after that, they would eat and rest.

He was shocked after coming back due to the amount of dance challenges that they were filming.

Fans may think that this trend is a wholesome way for idols to interact, it may actually feel like a "burden" to them, given the exhausting process of filming these dance challenges.

Leeteuk revealed:

"There is a special 'challenge zone' in front of the staircase of 'Music Bank'. There is also a speaker above it. Also, only challenge cell phones can be used in that zone. If you use another cam, you will be kicked out."

He continued that due to the large number of idols doing collab dance challenges, the staff would provide ticket numbers to reserve the "challenge zone" and let the staff know once they are finished, to cater to the artists waiting for their turn.

Lastly, if they want to collaborate with other artists, they have to adjust their schedules based on their availability.

In fact, Leeteuk shared that one junior of them asked him to go to work at 8 a.m. for the dance challenge, even if his stage recording was scheduled in the afternoon.

Leeteuk Recalls Importance of Fandom Color in Previous K-pop Generation

Sharing this, Leeteuk compared the difference between the past and current K-pop era.

He especially mentioned the significance of the fandom color assigned for each group, and how overlapping colors before were avoided to prevent offending the other idol.

Leeteuk explained:

"Back in our time, the official color (symbolizing the group) was important. TVXQ was pearl red, and Super Junior was pearl sapphire blue. But these days, there is no such thing."

Lastly, Leeteuk shared an anecdote about how in the past, singers who won first place on a music show would have a company dinner for the entire group after the show ended, and after a group concert featuring various idols, they would all take a tour bus home from work.
