Chinese Survival Show Accused of Copying BLACKPINK's 2023 Coachella Stage

A Chinese survival show is being accused of copying BLACKPINK's set and stage from their 2023 Coachella performance.

"Ride the Wind 2024" just started airing, but the program is already embroiled in controversy. After a group's performance of Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" was shared online, netizens were quick to spot similarities in their stage with BLACKPINK's 2023 Coachella stage.

Keep on reading for all the details.

Did 'Ride the Wind 2024' Copy BLACKPINK's Coachella Stage?

"Ride the Wind 2024" is being accused of copying BLACKPINK's 2023 Coachella performance of "Typa Girl" for one of the group's stages.

The group performed Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" and decided to go with a 1920s flapper theme. This immediately caught the attention of fans. As for their 2023 Coachella performance, BLACKPINK remixed "Typa Girl" to have a similar flapper theme, making use of big white feathers for their choreography and set.

This was especially evident on Zhang Yuxi's part. Besides using the feathers in a similar way as Jennie did for BLACKPINK's Coachella performance, it was also noted that her dance moves were similar to Jennie's.

"Ride the Wind 2024" was quickly accused of plagiarizing the idea, making fans of the show feel disappointed. Many criticized Mango TV and the producers of the show and asked them to stop copying the dances and stage designs of famous international artists.

Some comments read,

  • "The choreography and production team of 'Ride the Wind 2024' should take their work more seriously. Don't just copy from others."
  • "Why does it look like a copy of a K-pop stage?"
  • "Did the quality of 'Ride the Wind' go down? Even the stage ideas are borrowed."

However, some defended the producers, noting that BLACKPINK is not the first group to use feathers as stage props. Additionally, though the dance moves were similar, they were not identical. Therefore, it is hard to conclude that "Ride the Wind 2024" really copied the idea from BLACKPINK.

As of writing, the producer of the Chinese show has not commented on the controversy.
