Red Velvet Irene To Make Solo Debut — Will She Overcome The Hate From Her 'Power Trip' Controversy?

With Red Velvet Irene's debut confirmed, many are wondering if she will be able to overcome her previous power trip scandal.

Earlier in May, SM Entertainment released its third quarter music line-up previous. Many were surprised that among the already established soloists and groups under the label, one Red Velvet was going to make her solo debut. Irene is confirmed to be the next member after Wendy, Joy, and Seulgi to debut as a soloist with a mini-album.

As one of the leading beauties in K-pop and the leader of Red Velvet, Irene was once poised for a successful career with ample opportunities and endorsements from major brands. However, her trajectory was disrupted in 2020 when a fashion editor accused her of mistreating her staff and exhibiting diva-like behavior, often referred to as "star disease."

According to the fashion editor, the Red Velvet member lashed out and mistreated her. Soon, Irene released a public apology for her poor actions. SM Entertainment also apologized for the concern it caused the public. Irene met with the fashion editor to apologize personally, to which the editor accepted.

This led to people bashing Irene for "gapjil," which refers to abuse of power. Irene's reputation took a huge hit, and she went on a hiatus for nearly a year.

Though she has now returned to her activities as an idol and celebrity, her reputation still hasn't recovered. Unlike her peers, the one dubbed the "original visual of the third generation" no longer enjoys the same prominence as before.

More than three years since the attitude scandal, Irene has seen a resurgence in her solo activities, thanks to the backing of SM Entertainment. Recently, she hosted a personal photo exhibition and launched a photo book that captures her everyday beauty in ordinary moments. Additionally, she released a new song titled "I Feel Pretty," which serves as her boasting of her status as the leading visual in the third generation of K-pop.

Despite the setback caused by the scandal three years ago, Irene remains passionate about her career and committed to her fans. Now, she's actively making up for lost time with continued promotions, supported loyally by fans who are eager to welcome her back fully. The question is: will Korean netizens be able to support Irene's endeavors?

Only with the release of her mini-album will we know for sure.
