North Fork, South Fork Wildfire Could Wipe Out Entire Colorado Town: Winds Shift The Flames Toward The South Fork

The north fork and south fork wildfire leads one whole town to be evacuated to avoid the flames making its way to the town of Del Norte, Colo.

The north fork and south fork wildfire has been causing damage throughout the north fork of Colorado, but the winds have caused a change in the direction, now causing the flames to go toward the south fork. Del Norte is in trouble, thus causing the town of 400 to be evacuated.

This north fork and south fork wildfire is a 47-square mile fire that as of Friday, was a few miles southwest of the town. The flames are moving at about a mile per hour, according to fire spokeswoman Penny Bertram.

"They're hedging their bets," Bertram told the Huffington Post as more than 30 fire trucks will be ready to prevent the town from burning to the ground.

Residents gathered at a school to receive more information on what could be possibly happen.

"Every type of structure protection is in place," Jim Jaminet, fire management officer for the national forest, told about two dozen evacuees who gathered at Del Norte High School on Friday night.

South Fork's Mayor Kenneth Brooke sent his children elsewhere to be protected as he stayed back to help the rest of the citizens to safety as the fire nears.

"I just tell them it doesn't look good," Brooke told The Associated Press by phone Friday. "I tell them the truth, that the fire is coming. I just tell them to keep themselves safe, evacuate as need be and don't come back. We're just watching the fire and doing what we can for people's properties, but mostly it's just waiting. Right now I'm saying, 'Stay out.'"
