NewJeans may be a 2-year-old group, but they aren't new to recognition. Following their debut in 2022, they quickly racked up awards and broke records left and right with their hit after hit—the latest being the fan-favorite "Super Shy" that just won a spot on Pitchfork's 100 Best Songs of the 2020s So Far.
The 5-member outfit's earworm track didn't shy away from clinching the 13th spot on the American publication's list, released on October 1.
NewJeans is the only K-pop group to enter the roster. What's more? They even outranked other global artists' hits like "WAP" by Cardi B, "ALIEN SUPERSTAR" by Beyoncé, "good 4 u" by Olivia Rodrigo, "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter, and many more!

According to Pitchfork, "Super Shy" is NewJeans' "most effortless masterstroke," adding that "it captures the giddiness of possibility." The publication, which is known for its thorough and stringent critiquing, praised the song's drum n' bass beat that doesn't go overbearing and provides a breezy atmosphere all throughout.
Culture journalist Joshua Minsoo Kim wrote, "NewJeans invite you to relish the fantasy, all the members singing as if letting out a daydreamer's sigh."
A track under the extended play "Get Up," NewJeans "Super Shy" was released in July 2023 in collaboration with The Powerpuff Girls to commemorate the franchise's 25th anniversary.
Hence, the members were seen discussing superpowers in the music video, and the animation style is "pixelated," an obvious homage to the popular series. At some point, the five girls also transformed as their own version of the Powerpuff Girls.
