The twin giant pandas were born in the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan province, China.

The mother, a panda named Haizi, gave birth to the twin cubs on Saturday about 10 minutes apart.

One cub is female and weighs 79.2 grams (2.79 ounces). The other hasn't even been measured yet, as Haizi has yet to release the other cub from her embrace, according to staffers at the center.

There are only about 1,600 pandas in the wild, where they are severely threatened due to poaching, hunting, environmental destruction, and development. About 300 live in captivity, largely in China.

Giant pandas are an endangered species and they have trouble breeding, particularly in captivity. Females are only fertile for a few days each year.
