Doc Rivers Clippers Hire But Would Have Returned To Celtics & Now Garnett Clippers Trade Illegal

The Boston Celtics finally let Doc Rivers out of his contract, with the Clippers offering their 2015 first round selection as compensation.

But now the Clippers and Celtics can't make any player deals this summer, which means Garnett is stuck in Boston.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Doc might have been coaching the Celtics next season.

Before the Clippers offered the Celtics a first round pick in the 2015 NBA draft for the rights to the C's coach, Rivers had informed the Celtics organization he was planning on returning to the sidelines for the Celtics, and not—as had been reported—going into the studio as an NBA television analyst.

This is big news because a lot of outlets were reporting that Rivers' flirtation with the Clippers job, and a chance to team with Chris Paul who was heavily involved in the negotiations, meant he wasn't returning to the Celtics at all.

The on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again, negotiations between the teams seemed to have finally concluded earlier last week before the NBA stepped in and said that a Kevin Garnett plus Doc Rivers deal wasn't allowed.

A Garnett/Rivers swap for a first round pick and Clippers center, DeAndre Jordan, was all but done, but the NBA said it couldn't include a player and a coach in the same deal.

So both sides reached agreements to do the deal separately and the NBA again said they couldn't and any suspicion or addendum’s to a deal would be blocked by the league.

Most people gave up hope a Celtics-Clippers deal would ever be reached.

But now that Rivers has been hired as the Clippers' new head coach, that means Kevin Garnett is going to have to stay in Boston.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that the Celtics and Clippers cannot swap players, per the NBA's earlier stipulation, now that the Rivers deal has been completed.

He also reports that both teams were aware of that when they made the deal that opened up Rivers to head west.

Paul Pierce will stay as well even as his coach departs, unless the Celtics cut Pierce before the June 30th deadline.

Pierce is set to make $15 million next season, but the Celtics can shave off $10 million of that price tag by waiving the future Hall-of-Famer before a June 30th deadline.

With Rivers gone to LA, and Ray Allen already in Miami where they captured a title this year the "The Big Three" that splashed across the front pages when the team was assembled in the summer of 2007, and who won a title in 2008, is now done.
