K-pop sensation aespa is set to drop a new version of their hit single "Whiplash" on Thursday, March 27, at 1 p.m. KST.
The announcement was made on Monday via the group's official Twitter account. While no other information has been provided, fans are speculating that it could be the long-awaited, unreleased English version of the track. A post on Naver noted that the new version of the group's hit single would also include a remix by world-renowned DJ and producer Steve Aoki.
The original "Whiplash" was released on Oct. 21, 2024, as the title track of aespa's fifth mini-album of the same name. The EDM-driven techno song marked a bold departure from the group's previous sound. The mini-album, which contained six tracks, showcased aespa's versatility with a mix of genres including hip-hop, R&B, and pop-rock.
The track achieved significant chart success following its release. The song debuted at No. 53 on Spotify, marking the highest entry ranking for a K-pop girl group song released that year. It also made an impressive debut at No. 50 on the Billboard 200, becoming aespa's sixth consecutive album to enter the top 50—a record for K-pop girl groups. Additionally, "Whiplash" peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Global Excl. U.S. chart and No. 8 on the Global 200, making it aespa's first song to break into the top 10 on this chart.
In South Korea, "Whiplash" debuted at No. 1 on major domestic music charts and became a million-seller with over 1.02 million copies sold on the Circle Chart shortly after its release.
The Whiplash mini-album marked their first comeback in five months following the success of their debut full-length album's lead single, "Supernova."
This new release comes just days before aespa's scheduled appearance at the 2025 Billboard Women in Music Awards in California, where they will be honored as Group of the Year.
