Bensalem Cell Phone Tower Fire: Firefighters Stop Blazing Tower From Smashing Senior Citizens In Nearby Retired Living Complex [VIDEO]

Firefighters responding to a blazing cell phone tower which caught fire on Friday in Bensalem, P.A. were able to prevent the structure from smashing a nearby retired living complex for senior citizens, ABC Action News reports.

Demolition crews dismantled the 12-story-tall AT&T communications tower after it caught fire - ABC Action News caught the scene after 9:30 p.m. on Friday. A large crane lowered the cell phone tower to the ground behind the Bensalem Public Works building, nearby the retired living complex for senior citizens.

Welders installing steps on the structure accidentally touched off a fire in some insulation 10 hours before the cell phone tower was dismantled, ABC Action News also reports.

"It was real scary, because flames were just going up for a good 45 minutes," resident Merolene Robinson told ABC Action News.

"There was a lot of hot plastic falling, burning, and I didn't know if it was catching anything on fire," resident Jim Nelson told the station.

The welders who accidentally started the fire tried to put the fire out themselves using fire extinguishers, but were unsuccessful as flames and black smoke continued to inculcate the cell phone tower.

Firefighters and demolitionists eventually made a 300-foot safety perimeter around the cell phone tower and evacuated everyone in the surrounding areas.

"We had some people who were inconvenienced, but no structural damage to anything except the cell phone tower, and no injuries. So it's a good days work here," said Bensalem Township Public Safety Director Fred Harran, according to ABC Action News.
