The Last Of Us [SPOILERS]: Who Dies In The Game, And Should Ellie Be In The Sequel?

Now that Naughty Dog's PS3 exclusive The Last of Us is being celebrated worldwide, what are their ideas as far as a sequel, given the high death count that plagues the world of this zombie survival game?

Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann believes "the world is ripe for more stories, but as far as the journey Joel and Ellie goes on it ends with this game."

"We were very conscious that we didn't want to leave this story dangling. If we never do a sequel, we're okay with it, because we told the story we needed to tell."

Considering Joel and Ellie are some of the few characters who make it through the game alive, some fans may find this tidbit disheartening.

"The Last of Us" may feature two primary characters, but several important characters they meet along their journey wind up dying, including Joel's business partner Tess and Fireflies leader Marlene.

And with Ellie this close to dying herself, thanks to her immunity to zombie infection, a sequel without some appearance her and Joel would probably seem heartbreaking to gamers.

But opinions on whether if the game even needs a sequel are heavily divided.

"I don't feel like I need to return to this particular post-apocalyptic world," writes Kotaku contributor Kirk Hamilton.

"I don't need to hear any more stories from it. I don't need to see what Joel and Ellie get up to now that they're safe at Joel's brother's wilderness retreat. I certainly don't need to fight off another clicker, or make my way through another hunter camp."

And that is certainly Druckmann's feelings for the time being, though considering Naughty Dog is responsible for the Uncharted series and Crash Bandicoot, it's be foolish not to at least visit the idea.

"We've made exactly the game we wanted to play. We always said, let's not worry about what other people like, or what's popular, or try to second guess what's going to be successful to market. Let's make the game we want to play that doesn't exist right now. And that's what we did."
