Demi Lovato Speaks Out About Estranged Father's Death, Shared Mental Illness, Coping: Starting Treatment Foundation To Honor Dad

Demi Lovato's father died, and Lovato has given an emotional interview revealing details about their estranged relationship.

In the emotional interview, her first since her father died, Lovato revealed several aspects of her troubled relationshiop with her father, including mental health problems and addiction the two shared.

Demi Lovato, the singer, X-Factor host, and former Disney star, told Good Morning America's Robin Roberts that she was "coping OK" and said her dad was a "wonderful person", despite their being estranged for several years.

Lovato, 20, said they "didn't have the most ideal relationship... but he is still my dad."

Demi went to rehab two years ago for bulimia and drug and alcohol problems. Lovato revealed that her father also suffered with mental illness.

Lovato's father, Patrick Lovato, passed away of cancer. The two had not spoken for years.

"But, at the end of the day, he's still my dad and I grew up with him and he was a wonderful person," Lovato said.

Lavato announced she is launching a foundation in memory of her father's passing. The Lovato Treatment Scholarship help people with mental illness pay for treatment to honor her father.

Lovato said, "I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I've dealt with mental illnesses, but my father also dealt with mental illness and he was not able to function very well in society."

Demi Lovato thanked her fans, Lovatics, for support, saying " 'They have stood by me through everything that I've been through in my life...I've had incredible support from them and they can help me get through anything."

Meanwhile, Lovato's new single Made In The USA is doing well; Lovato will be a judge on the X Factor this season.  She bowed out of a photoshoot this weekend for the show but is expected to return soon.
