Netflix Original Series 'Orange Is The New Black' Renewed Prior to Premiere: Ratings Going Obsolete, And Shorter Hiatus To Come For Streaming Giant

"Orange is the New Black" may not have premiered on Netflix yet, but it's already been renewed for a second season!

"It is unusual," admits the company's VP of original content Cindy Holland to the New York Times. But the decision reportedly comes from wanting shorter wait time between seasons.

"Our hope is that we can launch [season 2] in late spring to early summer, rather than midsummer."

In a trailer released on Netflix's Youtube channel, we catch a glimpse of the prison dramedy based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name. The 13-episode season will be released in bulk on July 11, much like their recent revival of "Arrested Development."

Its unprecedented renewal continues the series' mold-breaking process, as the first season was also ordered off of a pitch alone.

"I pitched to them while I was still doing 'Weeds'. They bought the series off the pitch. They said, 'OK, let's make 13 of those,'" mused the 43-year-old mother-of-three.

"That never happens."

And again, "Orange is the New Black" does not premiere until July 11.

"We don't have the benefit of having viewing information from our subscribers yet, but we do know creatively everything about the season," continues Holland.

Netflix's unusual business model, coupled with its success with "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development," shows that ratings may be fast becoming a thing of the past.

"While we are always mindful of the audience, we are not slaves to ratings, which offers the creative teams we have confidence in the luxury of time to develop the stories and characters," adds Starz chief executive Chris Albrecht.
